Bhagirathpura Area Grapples with Serious Public Health Emergency

A serious public health crisis has gripped the Bhagirathpura locality in Indore, with more than 1,100 residents falling ill from contaminated drinking water. The situation has become critical, with approximately 150 patients currently hospitalized across various medical facilities in the city, fighting for their lives.

The tragedy has taken a devastating turn with the death of a six-month-old infant, highlighting the severity of the water contamination issue. The infant’s death has brought the public health emergency into sharp focus and raised urgent questions about water safety and municipal services in the area.

A Father’s Heartbreaking Account

In an interview with journalists, Sunil Sahu, a resident of Bhagirathpura, shared the tragic story of his six-month-old son, Avyaan. The infant began showing symptoms of vomiting and diarrhea a few days before his death. Following medical advice, Sahu initially treated his son at home with medications prescribed by a pediatrician.

Describing the circumstances that led to his son’s illness, Sahu explained, “The doctor advised me to give my son medicines at home. We bought milk from the market and started feeding him. Since the milk was thick, we would dilute it with water from the municipal tap connection.”

The distraught father claimed that the contaminated drinking water from the municipal supply caused his son’s symptoms to worsen, leading to severe vomiting and diarrhea. Tragically, the infant succumbed to the illness on December 29.

Growing Health Crisis

The contamination has affected residents across all age groups, but infants and young children appear to be among the most vulnerable. The overwhelming number of hospitalizations indicates that the contamination is not an isolated incident but a widespread problem affecting the municipal water supply serving the Bhagirathpura area.

Authorities have yet to release detailed information about the source of the contamination or the steps being taken to address this critical public health emergency.

This incident underscores the critical importance of ensuring safe drinking water supply to all citizens.
