INDORE: As scorching heatwaves push temperatures to extreme highs, Indore is facing one of its worst water crises in recent times. Despite official claims of supplying 423 Million Liters per Day (MLD) of water to the city, residents are left staring at dry taps and struggling with extremely low water pressure.
The situation on the ground paints a very different picture from the official data, turning daily survival into a severe challenge for the public.
A Widespread Crisis: 75 Out of 85 Wards Affected
The scale of the water shortage is alarming. Out of the 85 wards in the city, a staggering 75 are currently facing severe water scarcity. The crisis has reached a point where finding clean drinking water has become a daily struggle for thousands of families.
The shortage is not restricted to any one part of the city. Even premium and upscale townships across Indore, which typically have better infrastructure, are now severely hit. Residents in these high-end societies are also facing the harsh reality of empty water tanks and unfulfilled daily needs.
The Impact of the Scorching Heat
The intense summer heat is playing a major role in worsening this situation. Record-breaking temperatures have sharply increased the demand for water for drinking, cooling, and daily chores. At the same time, the extreme heat is drying up local groundwater sources faster than usual. Citizens are being forced to step out in the blistering sun, carrying buckets and waiting in long lines for municipal supply trucks that arrive irregularly, if at all.
Tanker Mafia Profits from Public Misery
While ordinary citizens suffer, the notorious “tanker mafia” is taking full advantage of the emergency. Desperate residents who have no other choice are being forced to buy water from private tankers at heavily inflated prices.
More shockingly, there are widespread reports that government-funded water tankers—which are supposed to be provided to the public for free—are being diverted. These government tankers are allegedly being sold in the black market to those who can pay the highest price. This illegal business is thriving as the administration struggles to keep a check on the distribution.
Thousands Complain Amid Mismanagement Allegations
The civic authorities are currently flooded with thousands of complaints from angry and exhausted residents. The central question remains: if 423 MLD of water is truly being pumped into the city’s system, where is it disappearing?
Adding to the public anger are serious allegations of cash distribution and corruption related to the water supply management. Many suspect that artificial shortages are being created in certain areas to benefit private water sellers.
The Road Ahead
The current situation in Indore demands immediate and strict action from the local administration. Authorities urgently need to crack down on the black marketing of government tankers, fix the distribution system to ensure equal water pressure, and investigate the missing water supply. As the heatwave shows no signs of slowing down, the people of Indore are desperately waiting for relief and a guarantee of their basic right to drinking water.
