
The bells of a historic victory are ringing in the headquarters of the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP),
where the Hon’ble Prime Minister Narendra Modi proclaimed, “lotus is now blooming from
Gangotri to Gangasagar”, lauding the decisive win of BJP in the 2026 state assembly elections of
West Bengal, Assam and Puducherry.
Spectacular mandate in West Bengal
The BJP, led by Suvendu Adhikari, has claimed a landslide victory in West Bengal assembly
election, where it has crossed 200 seats, way above the majority mark of 148 seats.
As per reports, BJP has completely wiped out the incumbent Trinamool Congress (TMC) in
multiple regions:
Coochbehar: 9-0
Alipurduar: 5-0
Jalpaiguri: 7-0
Darjeeling: 5-0
Purba Medinipur: 16-0
Jhargram: 5-0
Purulia: 9-0
Kalimpong: 1-0
The BJP is set to form the government in West Bengal for the first time, ending the 15-year rule
of Mamata Bannerjee-led TMC.
Hailing the “the lotus bloom” in the state, PM Modi stated on X, “The 2026 West Bengal
Assembly Elections will be remembered forever. People’s power has prevailed and BJP’s politics
of good governance has triumphed. I bow to each and every person of West Bengal.”
Union Agriculture Minister Shivraj Singh Chouhan also heaped praises on BJP’s victory in West
Bengal, “The triumph is a reflection of the nation’s faith in Modi’s leadership and the rejection of
cheap vote-bank politics.”
This year, West Bengal recorded a combined voter turnout of 92.47% in both Phases 1 and 2, the
highest poll participation since Independence.
Massive clean sweep in Assam
Assam state assembly also went to polls where the incumbent Chief Minister Himanta Biswa
Sarma (BJP) is set to re-establish the “double-engine” governance model of the BJP-led
National Democratic Alliance (NDA) in Assam for the third consecutive term.
BJP is winning a remarkable 82 seats on its own, already nearing two-thirds majority in the 126-
member legislative assembly, a thumping mandate by the people of Assam for CM Himanta
Sarma.
PM Modi thanked the people of Assam for a resounding victory, stating, “The BJP-NDA’s win in
the Assam Vidhan Sabha elections illustrates the unwavering support for our Alliance’s emphasis
on development and bringing a positive difference in people’s lives. I thank my sisters and
brothers of Assam for the resounding mandate. I also assure them that we will keep working for
the state’s transformation.”
Indian National Congress (INC), led by MP Gaurav Gogoi, is trailing far-behind, where Gogoi lost
his own seat in Assam’s Jorhat.
NDA to return in Puducherry
he incumbent Chief Minister N Rangaswamy is set to serve a historic fifth term in Puducherry, a
return for the BJP-NDA.
PM Modi credited Puducherry’s victory to the “track record of good governance” delivered by
CM Rangaswamy-led BJP-NDA.
The Union Territory had recorded the highest ever voter turnout of 89.87%
State assembly elections 2026
April had seen voters cast their ballots for one Union Territory and 4 state legislative assemblies’
elections, namely, West Bengal, Assam, Puducherry, Tamil Nadu and Kerala.
Polling began on April 9, with the last phase of voting on April 29, as announced by the Election
Commission.
The counting of votes and declaration of final results took place today on May 4.
