CENTRAL ISRAEL — A suspected terror attack across multiple locations in central Israel has left one person dead and at least five others wounded. The shooting took place on Sunday morning near the boundary with the West Bank, prompting a massive response from security and medical forces.
The Incident Timeline
The violence began around 10:30 a.m. with reports of a drive-by shooting at a gas station near the town of Kochav Yair. Shortly after, additional gunfire was reported in the nearby areas of Tsur Natan and Tsur Yitzhak.
Emergency rescue teams from Magen David Adom quickly arrived at the scenes to treat the victims. Tragically, a 35-year-old man died from his gunshot wounds. Medical personnel transported five other individuals to the Rabin Medical Center and Meir Medical Center for urgent care. Two of the victims are currently in serious condition, while a 61-year-old woman and a 31-year-old man are being treated for moderate injuries.
The Suspect and Security Response
Following the shootings, the Israel Police and the military launched a major manhunt. Helicopters and large numbers of ground troops searched the area. During the operation, security forces located and shot the suspected attacker.
Police identified the shooter as a Palestinian citizen of Israel from the nearby Arab town of Taybeh, and they successfully recovered the weapon used in the attack. While early reports suggested the possibility of a second shooter, Police Commissioner Danny Levy later confirmed that the suspect acted alone.
During the search, the Home Front Command instructed residents in the region to stay indoors and keep children safely locked down in their schools.
Reactions and Ongoing Investigation
Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu held an immediate security assessment to monitor the deadly incident. The Palestinian militant group Hamas publicly praised the shooting but did not officially claim responsibility for the attack.
Local leaders expressed shock over the nature of the attack. While border communities are highly vigilant, officials noted that an attack carried out by an Israeli citizen from a neighboring town was deeply unexpected.
Security forces remain at the scene to gather evidence and ensure the area is fully secure. Authorities have advised the public to remain alert and follow all official safety instructions as the investigation continues.
