A Night Guwahati Will Never Forget
There are cricketers who play a good innings. Then there are cricketers who change the course of a match in the blink of an eye. And then very rarely there is a Vaibhav Suryavanshi.
On April 10, 2026, at the rain-soaked Barsapara Cricket Stadium in Guwahati, this 15-year-old from Bihar did not just bat : he put on a masterclass that left veterans, coaches, and fans completely speechless. It started with rain, it ended with a storm no one at Guwahati will forget anytime soon. At the ACA Stadium, a 15-year-old kid turned a tricky chase into a highlight reel, and just like that, Vaibhav Suryavanshi announced himself to the IPL in style.

RCB First Innings: A Fighting but Flawed Total
RCB’s innings started on a disastrous note. Jofra Archer started with an accurate bouncer, and Salt gloves it back to the keeper on the very first delivery. With Phil Salt gone for a golden duck, RCB were immediately under pressure.
Devdutt Padikkal also fell for just 14 runs, and RCB found themselves at 45/2. Virat Kohli was going strong, but Ravi Bishnoi castled him through the gate, leaving RCB in trouble at 58/3. Krunal Pandya fell soon after, and the defending champions were reeling at 94/6 after 11 overs.
It looked like RCB would fold cheaply. But then their captain stood tall. Rajat Patidar scored a gritty 63 off 40 balls, holding the innings together. At the top, Virat Kohli gave them a quick start with 32 off 16, but couldn’t convert it into something bigger. The late push came from Venkatesh Iyer (29 off 15) and Romario Shepherd (22 off 11), helping RCB reach a competitive 202.
A brilliant final over from Venkatesh Iyer powered RCB to a strong finish. Sandeep Sharma conceded 21 runs as Iyer went on the attack, smashing two sixes and a four, to maximize the scoring. RCB surged past the 200-run mark, ending their innings at 201/8 after 20 overs. At that point, it looked like a match-winning total. It wasn’t even close
RR Chase:The Suryavanshi Show Begins

Over 1 : The First Signs of Danger
Rajasthan Royals got off to a flying start, reaching 9/0 after 1 over, with Vaibhav Suryavanshi finding an early boundary. Bhuvneshwar Kumar, one of the most experienced bowlers in IPL history, tried to keep him quiet : but the teenager had other ideas.
Over 2 : Jaiswal Falls, Suryavanshi Stays
Yashasvi Jaiswal smashed two sixes but fell to Josh Hazlewood, caught by Jitesh Sharma for 13 off 8 balls. RR were 21/1 after 2 overs. A lesser batsman might have slowed down after losing a partner. Suryavanshi simply did not care.
Over 3 : Hazlewood Gets the Suryavanshi Treatment
This was the over that made the cricket world sit up. His real test came in the third over when he was up against the Aussie veteran Josh Hazlewood, but he passed it with flying colours by blasting him for three fours and a six in four consecutive deliveries. He went on to score 18 runs off the Aussie pacer. RR stormed to 37/1 after 3 overs.
Over 4 & 5 : The Fifty That Shook IPL
RR moved to 56/1 in 4 overs, with the youngster tearing into the bowling attack. The onslaught intensified in the fifth over as Suryavanshi brought up a stunning 50 off just 15 balls, powering RR to 73/1 in 5 overs.
Suryavanshi reached his fifty in just 15 balls with a six off Bhuvneshwar Kumar. Phil Salt caught the lofty shot, but the momentum made him stumble over the rope, signalling a maximum.
Over 6 : Record Powerplay for RR
The 97 runs scored by RR in the powerplay is not only a franchise record but the highest for any team in IPL 2026 so far. Suryavanshi and Jurel had completely taken the game away from RCB inside the first 6 overs.
Over 7 & 8 : More Carnage Before the End
He carried on his run riot even after the powerplay and smashed two sixes in the 8th over before getting out in the subsequent over.
Suryavanshi’s Dismissal : Caught by Kohli
Suryavanshi was caught by Virat Kohli off Krunal Pandya after taking the score to 129, dismissed for a well-made 78 off just 26 balls. The crowd gave a standing ovation. The job was already done.
Suryavanshi’s Innings: Stat Breakdown
Suryavanshi is now the only player in IPL history to score three half-centuries in fewer than 18 balls. In T20 cricket, he also became only the second batter to register three half-centuries with a strike rate above 300 : Kieron Pollard leads this elite list with four such fifties.
Interestingly, the entire RCB team managed only seven sixes in their innings : equalled single-handedly by Suryavanshi alone.
| Stat | Number |
| Runs | 78 |
| Balls | 26 |
| Fours | 8 |
| Sixes | 7 |
| Strike Rate | 300 |
| Fifty in balls | 15 (record-equalling) |
| Orange Cap total | 200 runs in 4 matches |
What Makes Suryavanshi So Unstoppable?

What stands out is not just the scoring rate but the opposition he has faced. He has taken on experienced bowlers including Bhuvneshwar Kumar and Josh Hazlewood this season, and in earlier matches even tested himself against Jasprit Bumrah without hesitation. Despite his age, his shot selection has looked clear and confident. He picks lengths early and commits fully, especially through the leg side where most of his sixes have come.
The teenager himself revealed his mental approach after the match. Suryavanshi revealed his simple mantra: “At the back of your mind, you are aware of who is bowling, but I make a conscious effort to play the ball and not the bowler, and to stick to my own game. My father, my coaches, and my guardian, Romi sir, constantly remind me that this is a long journey.”
Bhuvneshwar Kumar said: “He is not slogging, he is playing proper cricket shots. For a 15-year-old, he is too mature. He deserves all the credit for the way he is batting.”
Conclusion
Vaibhav Suryavanshi is 15 years old. He has already smashed Bumrah for a first-ball six, torn apart Hazlewood for 18 runs in one over, and now single-handedly demolished the defending champions. He is not just a talent : he is a phenomenon. Guwahati came for a match, they witnessed the arrival of something special.
