India's Sky Shield: DRDO Unveils Indigenous Kusha Air Defence System to Guard Skiesup to 400 km

“India takes a giant leap in air defence! DRDO rolls out the indigenous Kusha system three
powerful variants ready to guard our skies from 150 to over 400 km. Trials begin this
September, and by 2030, India’s shield will be fully in place!”
In a major leap toward self-reliance in defence technology, India’s Defence Research and
Development Organisation (DRDO) has announced the development of the Kusha Air
Defence System, an indigenous, multi-layered missile shield capable of neutralizing aerial
threats at distances ranging from 150 km to over 400 km.

What is the Kusha Air Defence System?

The Kusha Air Defence System is India’s homegrown solution to counter modern aerial
threats, including long-range enemy missiles and fighter aircraft. Its name is drawing as
Kusha, the son of Lord Ram symbolizing strength, strategy, and resilience this advanced
system marks a major step in strengthening India’s defensive capabilities.
Designed to match or even rival top global systems like Russia’s S-400 Triumf and the
American THAAD, Kusha is built as a three-tier interceptor shield, with each variant
targeting specific ranges:
Kusha M1: Covers short to medium ranges, up to 150–200 km
Kusha M2: Designed for long-range threats, with a reach of 250–300 km
Kusha M3: The most powerful of the trio, capable of intercepting threats beyond 400 km,
potentially with hypersonic tracking abilities
Together, these variants are poised to provide India with a layered, high-performance
defence network to safeguard its skies in any conflict scenario.

Why It Matters?

With growing regional tensions and the rapid evolution of threats like drones, ballistic
missiles, and stealth aircraft, India faces an urgent need for a strong and reliable air
defence system that it can fully call its own.
Though systems like Akash are already in service and S-400 units have been imported from
Russia, the development of the Kusha system marks a critical step forward. It offers
complete strategic autonomy freeing India from foreign dependencies and giving it full
control over how it defends its skies, both now and in the future.

A Step Towards Atmanirbhar Bharat

The development of the Kusha Air Defence System is a strong reflection of Prime Minister
Narendra Modi’s vision for Atmanirbhar Bharat (Self-Reliant India). Beyond strengthening
national security, the project is expected to create advanced tech jobs, open new avenues
for defence exports, and significantly cut down India’s reliance on foreign military imports.

What’s Next?

The road ahead for the Kusha Air Defence System is already charted:
Initial trials are set to begin by September 2025
Comprehensive testing and validation across the armed forces will follow between 2026
and 2028
Full-scale induction and deployment is expected by 2030
Once operational, the system will be deployed by both the Indian Air Force and Indian Army
across strategic locations and sensitive border regions. It will play a key role in building a
fully integrated air defence shield, strengthening India’s ability to counter any aerial threat
swiftly and independently.

Global Impact

With the Kusha Air Defence System, India enters an elite group of nations—including the
United States, Russia, China, and Israel—that possess the capability to design and build
long-range, multi-layered air defence systems entirely on their own.
This achievement significantly boosts India’s strategic deterrence, sending a strong
message about its growing technological and military edge. It also positions India as a
potential exporter of advanced defence systems, especially to partner nations in Southeast
Asia, Africa, and the Middle East seeking reliable and cost-effective alternatives.
As global security dynamics shift and demand for indigenous, sovereign defence
capabilities rises, Kusha has the potential to not only protect India’s skies but also shape
its role as a defence technology leader on the world stage.

Kusha: India’s Invisible Shield for a Visible Future

The Kusha Air Defence System is more than just a defence platform it represents a major
technological breakthrough, a vital strategic asset, and a clear sign of India’s growing
strength in the global defence arena. As Kusha prepares to take its place in the sky, India
moves one step closer to intercepting threats before they even appear on the radar with
confidence, capability, and complete self-reliance.
