In a tragic and alarming incident, an Indian Air Force (IAF) AN-32 transport aircraft crashed and caught fire on Saturday at the Jorhat Air Force Station, also known as Rowriah Airport, in Assam. The severe accident occurred while the military plane was attempting to land at the airbase.
What Happened During the Landing?
According to the Indian Air Force and initial ground reports, the AN-32 aircraft went down within the secure premises of the airfield. Moments after landing, the aircraft reportedly caught fire.
Emergency response teams, including fire and rescue units, were immediately deployed to the site. They acted quickly to control the blaze and prevent the fire from spreading to other parts of the military base.
Casualties and Current Status
While official numbers are still awaited, early reports indicate that the pilot of the aircraft is feared dead. The Indian Air Force has not yet released a formal statement regarding the total number of crew members on board or the complete details of the casualties and injuries. Rescue and medical teams are currently assessing the situation on the ground.
Official Investigation Ordered
The Indian Air Force has confirmed the crash and stated that a high-level investigation is currently underway. Authorities will examine the aircraft’s remains and flight data to determine the exact cause of the crash. The inquiry will focus on whether the tragic accident was the result of a technical failure, bad weather conditions, or human error.
Jorhat Air Force Station’s Strategic Role
Located in Upper Assam, Jorhat Air Force Station serves as a crucial military hub for operations across India’s northeastern frontier. The base supports transport aircraft, helicopters, and various logistical missions connected to border regions and remote locations.
Given its strategic location, any incident involving an operational aircraft at the station attracts significant attention from defence authorities
A Tragic History in the Region
This latest crash has brought back painful memories of recent aviation accidents linked to the Jorhat airbase:
- Recent Sukhoi Crash: Just months ago, two IAF pilots lost their lives when their Sukhoi Su-30MKI fighter jet crashed in the remote hills of Assam’s Karbi Anglong district. That jet had also taken off from the Jorhat station for a routine training flight.
- The 2019 AN-32 Tragedy: The Jorhat airfield was the same starting point for the tragic June 2019 flight, where an AN-32 aircraft vanished from the radar shortly after takeoff. It later crashed in the dense mountains of Arunachal Pradesh, claiming the lives of all 13 defence personnel on board.
Official Statement Awaited
As of the time of publication, the Indian Air Force has not released a detailed official statement regarding the number of personnel on board, the condition of the crew, or the exact circumstances surrounding the crash. Rescue operations and damage assessment efforts are continuing at the airbase.
Further updates are expected as military authorities complete their preliminary assessment of the incident.
The nation awaits further updates from the Ministry of Defence as the armed forces continue their ground operations at the crash site.
