RSS is not an Indian version of the Ku Klux Klan: Dattatreya Hosabale

Dattatreya Hosabale dismissed comparisons between the RSS and the Ku Klux Klan, calling them misleading and historically inaccurate. Speaking in Washington, D.C., he addressed long-standing criticisms, arguing that the organization has been wrongly portrayed while its cultural roots, philosophy of unity, and broader contributions have not been adequately recognized.

The Rashtriya Swayamsevak Sangh (RSS) General Secretary, Dattatreya Hosabale, has strongly rejected comparisons between the RSS and the Ku Klux Klan. His remarks came during the New India Conference organized by the Hudson Institute in Washington, D.C..

Hosabale described the comparison as inaccurate and misleading. He emphasized that the Ku Klux Klan is historically associated with white supremacy and far-right extremism in the United States. He said this ideology is fundamentally different from that of the RSS.

Misconceptions about the RSS

Addressing long-standing criticisms, Hosabale stated that a narrative has been built over decades, either knowingly or unknowingly, portraying the RSS as a Hindu supremacist, anti-Christian, anti-minority, anti-development, and anti-modernization organization.

He argued that these claims misrepresent the organization. He added that the positive contributions of the RSS have not been adequately highlighted, while negative perceptions continue to dominate public discourse.

RSS rooted in cultural values

Hosabale explained that the RSS is a volunteer-driven organization inspired by the cultural ethos and civilizational values of Bharat, often associated with what is broadly termed Hindu culture.

He emphasized the principle of unity, stating that the philosophy guiding the RSS promotes harmony and coexistence. According to him, the idea of supremacy does not align with Hindu thought. He also said that historically, Hindus have not pursued expansionist agendas through invasions.

Philosophical foundation and global message

Reinforcing this perspective, Hosabale referenced themes from the G20 Presidency of India 2023, which drew from ancient Indian philosophy, particularly the concept expressed in the Maha Upanishad, “Vasudhaiva Kutumbakam,” meaning “One Earth, One Family, One Future.”

He noted that this philosophy reflects the broader worldview that underpins the RSS and promotes inclusivity and a shared global future.
