Introduction
IPL 2026, officially branded as TATA IPL 2026, is the 19th edition of the world’s most-watched T20 cricket league. This season features 84 total matches 10 more than last year played across 14 stadiums in India. Royal Challengers Bengaluru enter as defending champions, having won their maiden title in 2025 after defeating Punjab Kings by just 6 runs in the final.
The season was originally scheduled to start March 26 to allow a three-week gap after the 2026 Men’s T20 World Cup final on March 8. Then in late February 2026, the start date was pushed back two more days, resulting in the IPL window running from March 28 to May 31.

No Opening Ceremony BCCI pays tribute to stampede victims
The BCCI confirmed that IPL 2026 will not have any opening ceremony as a mark of respect for the victims of the stampede that took place during RCB’s victory celebration on June 4 last year. The BCCI has assured fans that the tournament will conclude with a spectacular closing ceremony on May 31, the day of the final.
RCB has outlined multiple steps to honour the 11 fans who lost their lives. The franchise will permanently leave 11 seats vacant at the M. Chinnaswamy Stadium as a tribute. RCB CEO Rajesh Menon confirmed that players will wear jersey number 11 for practice on game day as a mark of respect.
RCB has also invested nearly ₹7 crore into enhancing crowd safety at the stadium, including AI-powered surveillance cameras, improved entry and exit systems, and revised crowd management protocols.
A minute of silence will precede the start of play on March 28.
Chinnaswamy Stadium — Racing Against Time
The stadium is racing against time to complete infrastructure work. A memorial plaque has been unveiled beside the players’ entrance to the pavilion to honour the 11 lives lost. RCB and the KSCA have committed to leaving 11 seats vacant forever. New safety systems include ticketing integrated with the Bengaluru Metro and staggered entry through QR-coded tickets, both designed to ease congestion.
RCB will play only five of their seven home matches in Bengaluru this season. Their remaining two matches will be held at the Shaheed Veer Narayan Singh International Cricket Stadium in Raipur.

On the pitch, all the ingredients for a blockbuster edition are present. Record franchise valuations, a historic auction headlined by Cameron Green’s ₹25.20 crore deal, the Jadeja–Samson trade saga, a 14-year-old in Vaibhav Suryavanshi ready to face the world, and a resurgent RCB now under new ownership looking to defend their maiden title.
